Junior High and High School
Thanks to my grandmother (also an artist) what I didn't give away, I saved. Consequently, I have a good collection of grade school art, junior high, high school and college doodles/assignments. The samples above are (left to right) 10th grade, 8th grade, and 10th grade. The sample below isn't dated, but I think this is a college-era doodle. By high school I was still a bit sloppy in my technique, but this tightened up some by college. Most paintings, even still, originate without a preceeding drawing, even on the canvas. I still have to dredge up some old elementary school drawings so you can see how awful I was! It's interesting to see the progress, though. I have no idea why I chose to draw or paint what I did - I just painted whatever came to mind. My kids still ask why I painted a student with a huge beaker in his room. The answer is that I really don't know. I just saw this kid in my mind's eye, and drew him. He was nerdy, but content and serious about his study. His mom appears in the kitchen behind his door. He seemed like the kind of kid who would save the world by science.
